What do I need to rent and operate a boat?
Operators must be at least 21, have prior boating experience, and present a valid photo ID. Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 must have a valid boating safety license (available at boat-ed.com). Multiple operators are allowed as long as they meet all requirements, attend the safety briefing, and sign waivers.
-
What are the pickup/return times, and where can I keep the boat?
Daily rentals: Pick up after 8 AM, return by 4 PM.
Multi-day rentals: Ready at 8 AM the first day; due back by 4 PM on the final day.
You may keep the boat at your own dock if it’s adequate—just provide the address when booking. Slips at Duck Key Marina are available for multi-day rentals for $75/night (based on availability). -
How far can I take the boat, and are there areas I must avoid?
Boats may operate within 10 miles of Marathon and up to 10 miles offshore in the Atlantic or Gulf. The Keys have extremely shallow waters—stay within marked channels and pay close attention to navigation markers. Some areas are protected marine sanctuaries where fishing or harvesting is prohibited. We will review these with you, and the onboard GPS will alert you when you enter one. -
Do you provide routes, maps, or navigation help?
Yes. We can recommend destinations, explain routes, offer a quick GPS tutorial, and loan you a Middle Keys paper chart marked with our favorite spots. -
What can we do on the water, and are there any activity restrictions?
The area offers endless possibilities — fishing, snorkeling, diving, cruising, sandbar hopping, or visiting waterfront restaurants. We’re happy to make recommendations. Beaching is not allowed due to limited tide swing and the risk of getting stuck—always anchor in at least 3 feet of water. Towing tubes, wakeboards, or any towables is not permitted. -
What comes with the rental?
All required safety equipment, including life vests, flares, whistle, dive flag, VHF radio, fire extinguisher, Garmin GPS, and an anchor. -
What should we bring, and is there anything we should avoid?
We recommend bringing sunscreen, towels, snacks, plenty of water, sunglasses, and hats. We ask that you avoid wearing dark-colored Crocs or similar shoes, as they can leave permanent stains on the boats. -
How does fuel work?
Boats go out full and are refueled at the marina when you return. You only pay for the fuel you used. -
Do you offer snorkel or fishing gear, and what supplies are available at the marina?
Snorkel gear and fishing rods are available to rent. Light tackle, frozen bait, and ice are sold at the marina. Anyone 16+ who plans to fish must have a Florida fishing license, available at gooutdoorsflorida.com. -
What policies or fees should I know about?
A $1,500 refundable damage deposit is required at pickup. A $100 cleaning fee applies only if the boat requires more than a light wash and the renter chooses not to clean it. Pets are welcome—renters are responsible for any mess or damage. -
Do the boats have shade or bathrooms?
All boats provide some shade (bimini tops offer more than T-tops). None of the boats have bathrooms onboard. -
